R-plates are a new initiative that has been introduced to Australian roads. The R-plates or 'Return Plates' are used to allow other road users to recognise those drivers who are returning to the road after trauma. They indicate to other road users that the driver may need some extra time and space while driving and to be considerate.

my Car Tyre & Auto came up with the scheme after a survey of 1000 Australian drivers found that 73% had been affected by a road incident. One in five felt vulnerable returning to the road after some time while two-thirds of drivers felt safer having a visible P or L plate when driving.

The plates also include a QR code linking to support services. The plates can be ordered online and mailed to you or you can download one and print it at home, you can find them here.

If you've been impacted by trauma on the road and need extra support or someone to talk to, you can contact a Sonder team member 24/7 who can help you out.
