May 4 is World Maternal Mental Health Day, a day that draws much needed attention to the reality of mental health concerns for mothers. Motherhood is both amazing and challenging... and it's no surprise that significant physical and life changes around pregnancy and childbirth can make women more vulnerable to mental illness.

Women of any age, culture, race and income level can develop mental health issues. It's estimated that as many as one in five new mothers experience some type of mood or anxiety disorder, and symptoms can emerge during pregnancy or in the months following childbirth. The occurrence of mental health issues can impact a woman's ability to thrive during motherhood. It can also impact the development and wellbeing of her child, particularly if the issues go unnoticed and unaddressed.

The right support can enhance a mother's resilience, connection to community, and capacity to nurture the important bond between herself and her child. Mental health care and support that incorporates education, prevention and early intervention is vital. Effective treatment and support is available, and can have lasting positive impacts for mothers and families.

What can I do?

Whether you're a mother yourself and/or you know one, the first step is increasing awareness of maternal mental health issues. Awareness can help reduce stigma and increase the likelihood that impacted mothers will seek support. So don't be afraid to talk about maternal mental health challenges and spread awareness of World Maternal Mental Health Day. This May 4th, send a message, make a phone call, or chat in person to a mother that you know... ask how they're going and let them know you care.
