If you've received a positive result on a rapid antigen test, you no longer need to get a PCR test, as a positive result indicates you have an extremely high chance of having COVID-19. This change has been introduced in order to relieve pressure on the testing system, and allow people with symptoms to be prioritised at testing clinics.

After you've received a positive test result (either via RAT or PCR) you must:

  • Immediately isolate at home for at least 7 days from the day you had your test. For more in-depth instructions, head over to the Australian government's COVID-19 hub here.

  • If test is positive you must stay at home until symptoms are gone or have a negative test.

  • If you have no symptoms at Day 7, you can return to normal living and leave your home. You do not need a further test.

  • Wear a mask when leaving the home and avoid visiting high-risk settings for at least 7 days following a negative test or end of symptoms.

While at home isolating, you should wear a mask if you need to walk through the house to reach a toilet or bathroom, but otherwise remain in a private space. Ensure you sanitise any parts of the house that you come into contact with such as taps or doorknobs, and practice good hygiene.

For those who are close contacts, you will need to adhere to the close contact rules of the state or territory you are in.

Most people will be able to manage any symptoms they might develop at home. However, if you are pregnant, live with a chronic health condition or are aged 65 or over, you should contact your GP for advice. If you're concerned about your symptoms at any point, you can also speak to us here at Sonder.

Each state and territory health authority has its own rules and resources and you can visit the relevant health department's advice for more information on what to do if you test positive for COVID:
